Environmental Advocacy in a Contentious World

October 23, 2023 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

“Environmental Advocacy in a Contentious World”

Monday, October 23, 3:30-5pm, Eddy 200

Dr. David Sonnenfeld, Emeritus Professor of Sociology and Environmental Policy, Department of Environmental Studies, State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), Syracuse, NY

Environmental concerns are ubiquitous, if not universal, in today’s world, across all types of political regimes and systems. Yet we are in a particularly unsettled moment with regard to the legitimacy of political institutions, parties, and leaders, across the political spectrum. In such a period of dynamic and epochal social change, where do the biophysical environment and related politics fit in? What theories, concepts, and tools do social scientists have to better understand contemporary environmental conditions, challenges, and opportunities for environmental advocacy and engagement? How do environmental politics, policymaking, and governance work in the many parts of the world that function under illiberal, non-democratic, or authoritarian leaders, movements, or institutions? What are the implications for environmental advocacy in the full variety of socio-political settings?

This event is part of CSU’s thematic YEAR of DEMOCRACY.

OWL is not available in Eddy 200, so this talk will not be held hybrid.
