Gain the skills necessary to strengthen community health, improve health disparities, and implement evidence-based interventions to address today’s key health challenges.

Health promotion is a core function of public health, the goals being to improve the health status of individuals, families, and communities (both locally and globally). In addition to learning key health promotion concepts and skills, students will also learn mixed methods evaluation approaches, apply the Health Impact Assessment process with a health equity lens, and gain a solid understanding of those factors underlying critical health outcomes including biology and health disparities.

Students from this concentration will be able to work in a variety of settings and sectors focused on community health outcomes and reducing health disparities. Sample careers include:

  • Youth Wellness Coordinator with a community non-profit
  • Healthy Hearts Educator with a healthcare system
  • Wellness Coordinator for employees of a county health department
  • Program Evaluation Specialist with a community health organization
  • Chronic Disease Health Systems Specialist with a state health department
  • Community Health Project Coordinator with a healthcare services system
  • Substance Use Prevention Coordinator with a county health department
  • Program Officer with a philanthropic foundation
  • Project Specialist with a state non-profit
